Tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and more have been popular for generations, but a recent resurgence in popularity has made them bigger than ever.
If you’ve decided you want to join a tabletop RPG, you should be prepared before your first game. Sure, you could use generic and boring dice, or you could impress your friends at the table with some of the coolest dice sets on the market.
Here are some of the best choices for both new players and dice goblins, so you can roll in style.
1. Steampunk-Themed Dice
When it comes to dice sets, you have a few options for materials. You can go with plastic or resin, wood, gemstone, glass, or metal. There are also precision dice, thematic dice, and more.
The most common material used is plastic and polyresins. Polyhedral dice are often used in tabletop RPGs, most commonly in D&D. Make sure you know the type of dice you need for the game you’re playing.
For instance, in D&D, players often use a set of seven dice. These include a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and often a “percentile” die.
One of our favorite sets includes steampunk dice such as metal dice with industrial designs or resin dice with small gears on the inside.
2. African Bloodstone Gemstone Dice
Natural stone dice are as fun to play with as they are to collect and admire. You have a variety of different gemstones to choose from, such as amethyst, lapis lazuli, fluorite, opal, aventurine, hematite, and more. If you love the idea of picking dice based on a character you’re playing, gemstone dice can be a great choice due to the many options.
Gemstone dice are more fragile than other types, so make sure you have the right equipment to protect them. Invest in a dice carrying bag and get a lined dice rolling tray to protect your dice (and the table).
If you’re looking for some cool dice made out of natural stone, consider African Bloodstone. This type of D20 looks cool on its own or as a part of a set and works particularly well for an elf character.
3. Dragon Scales Metal Dice
Although plastic and resin are the most common dice material, many players love the hefty feeling of rolling metal dice. These dice sets are usually made out of brass, zinc, or pewter.
Metal dice can be painted in different colors or left with a natural metal look. There are also hollow metal dice, which can be a bit tricky to read at times but have an eye-catching design sure to attract attention.
If you’re feeling adventurous and you love the idea of a themed set for your tabletop RPG, consider buying a set of metal dice decorated with dragon scales. Just make sure you have a dice rolling tray to protect the table.
The Dice You Need for Tabletop RPGs
Tabletop RPGs are a lot of fun, even if you don’t have all the gear that more experienced players might have. Get a good starting set of dice that you like, make sure they’re balanced, and roll up that character.
These three sets are some of our favorites, but there are plenty of options on the market. Look around to see what inspires you. Now, roll for initiative.
